3 Years 2 Months’ Imprisonment for Motor Insurance Fraud

A 39-year old chauffeur, Mohammed Eunos Zakaria, who planned and carried out an elaborate insurance fraud involving a staged road traffic accident was sentenced to 3 years and 2 months’ imprisonment following his conviction after a trial.

Eunos had claimed trial and was convicted of six charges of insurance fraud in which he had conspired with eight others to fraudulently lodge motor insurance accident claims in order to cheat three companies of more than $57,000.

His accomplices were each sentenced to between six weeks and six months’ imprisonment after having pleaded guilty to their respective charges earlier.

Eunos had planned and carried out the staged accident after having obtained the use of two cars and a van, and he was also responsible for obtaining the necessary paperwork to lodge or support the false claims. Eunos had also attempted to interfere with the Police’s investigations and witnesses.

In delivering the verdict, the Court noted that the offences were well planned and difficult to detect.
