A Short Detention Order (SDO) is an order which requires that the offender be detained in prison for a period not exceeding 14 days. Based on the circumstances of the case, the nature of the offence and the character of the offender, the court can impose an SDO, which is deterrent in nature and will allow the offender to experience the ‘short, sharp, shock’ of prison life.
If the SDO is successfully completed, the criminal record will be considered ‘spent’ meaning that the offender is deemed to have no record of that conviction.
