A 26-year-old self-employed Singaporean man was sentenced a $2,400 fine after pleading guilty to negligently causing hurt to a 10-year old girl while riding his e-scooter along a shared path.
- He pleaded guilty in the State Courts of Singapore.
- At the material time, the man was riding his e-scooter along a shared path when he saw the walking in the same direction in front of him. The girl turned around when she heard the man approaching and moved to the left to try to get out of his way, but he was moving at a speed of about 30kmh and could not stop in time and knocked into her. The man hit the victim’s right shoulder from behind and caused her to fall face forward onto the pathway and hit her mouth on the ground and suffer multiple dental injuries.
- The man made restitution of $2,000 for the girl’s medical fees.
- It is unclear whether he was represented by a Criminal Defence Lawyer during the presentation of his mitigation plea and when the Court imposed the sentence.
Causing hurt by a negligent act is an offence under section 337(b) of the Penal Code (Cap 224) which states:
Causing hurt by an act which endangers life or the personal safety of others
337. Whoever causes hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or the personal safety of others, shall be punished —
(a) in the case of a rash act, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5,000, or with both; or
(b) in the case of a negligent act, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 6 months, or with fine which may extend to $2,500, or with both.
A person convicted of this offence can be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 6 months, or with fine which may extend to $2,500, or with both.
