4 Weeks’ Imprisonment for Newly-Qualified Driver Who Caused Death of 2 1/2 Month Old Baby in Car Accident

A 21-year newly-qualified driver, Nickson Guay Seng Tiong, was sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment and disqualified from holding a driving licence for five years after pleading guilty to a charge for an offence of carrying out a negligent act which caused the death of a 2 ½ month old baby boy.

On 20 October 2014, Guay had only been driving his new Mazda car for less than a week when he was driving along the extreme right lane of North Buona Vista Road and failed to stop at the cross junction before he turned right and also failed to keep a proper lookout when making the right turn into Ayer Rajah Avenue. Guay did not wait for the traffic light to turn red and for the “right-turn arrow” to appear before making the turn.

Subseuently, Guay’s car entered the path of another car which was travelling straight from the opposite direction and which had the right of way and the two cars collided.

The baby boy had been in the backseat of the car with his mother and he suffered severe traumatic brain injury as a result of the accident which he eventually succumbed to.

Guay’s criminal defence lawyer highlighted his remorse and trauma suffered from the accident as well as his accomplishments in having started his own digital marketing agency which was very successful.
