9 Months’ Imprisonment for Running Red Light and Killing 2 Pedestrians

A 55-year old project manager, Ng Boon Wee, was sentenced on 17 March 2015 to nine months’ imprisonment for nine months and disqualified from holding a driving licence for six years after he pleaded guilty to an offence of dangerous driving which resulted in the deaths of a 72-year old hawker and an 18-year old polytechnic student.

Ng had been driving along Sin Ming Avenue at 7:19 am when he ran a red light and collided into the victims who were walking across a pedestrian-crossing showing the “green man” signal.

The victims were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital but succumbed to their injuries subsequently.
The Court was told that although Ng was familiar with the traffic junction and knew that he was approaching a signalised pedestrian crossing with heavy traffic, he acted rashly because he did not bother to slow down or check for pedestrians.
