1 year imprisonment for man who stepped on wife’s head

A 36-year-old Singaporean self-employed man was sentenced to one year’s jail after pleading guilty to causing grievous hurt to his 35-year-old wife woman and breaching her personal protection order (PPO) against him.

Voluntarily causing grievous hurt is an offence under section 322 of the Penal Code (Cap 224) which states:

322. Whoever voluntarily causes hurt, if the hurt which he intends to cause or knows himself to be likely to cause is grievous hurt, and if the hurt which he causes is grievous hurt, is said “voluntarily to cause grievous hurt”.

A person who commits this offence will be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years and shall also be liable to fine or to caning.
