A 38-year old unemployed man, Shanker Raju Krishnasamy, was sentenced to 3 years and 3 weeks’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to 3 offences involving criminal intimidation, committing a rash act and an unrelated charge of contravening a personal protection order (PPO) granted to his former wife.
Here are some brief, available facts on the case:
- He pleaded guilty to 3 charges. 4 charges, including two charges for calling 999 to cause annoyance to police radio operators, were taken into consideration for the purpose of sentencing.
- When Shanker had too much to drink – he drank 3 cans of beer, 3 bottles of beer and 2 bottles of rice wine – he returned home and turned on the gas stove in the kitchen.
- He then lit a cigarette and told his mother “Let’s die together” and pushed her away when she tried to turn off the stove. He also locked the front gate to prevent her from leaving the flat.
- For the PPO-related charge, he breached the terms of the PPO when he continued to cause family violence to his ex-wife by harassing her.
