A 31-year-old Singaporean man, a muay thai instructor, was sentenced to 7 years and 4 months’ jail and 4 strokes of the caning for sexually penetrating a woman whom he was massaging.
- The man claimed trial to the Charge in the State Courts of Singapore. He was convicted by the Court after a trial was conducted.
- According to reports, the victim attended a class at the man’s gym in 2016. The man was the instructor of the class, and there were three other women attending the same class that day. After the class, the victim accepted the man’s offer of a free Thai massage. The man told her to take off most of her clothes, lie down on the gym’s massage table and cover herself with a towel. Later, the man sexually penetrated the victim while massaging her inner thigh area and stopped after she shouted at him.
- The man was not represented by a Criminal Defence Lawyer during the trial and presentation of his defence.
Sexual assault involving penetration is an offence under section 376 of the Penal Code (Cap 224) which states:
376.— (2) Any person (A) who —
(a) sexually penetrates, with a part of A’s body (other than A’s penis, if a man) or anything else, the vagina or anus, as the case may be, of another person (B).
A person convicted of this offence can be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 20 years and shall also be liable to fine or to caning.
